Stanze. Spagnulo

Unlike many other sculptural approaches from the second half of the 20th century and the early 21st, the work of Giuseppe Spagnulo has consistently maintained a link to “a decidedly handmade approach, one that involves a great amount of energy and aesthetic tension pushed to the very limits of impetuosity and feeling”, as Bruno Corà noted in 2014.
The current exhibition at Galleria dello Scudo is dedicated to a selection of works on paper, including some of those previously shown in his solo exhibition during the winter of 2014–2015.
These works reveal the enduring expressive power of a visual language rooted in the very act of sculpting.
“Painted, or rather sculpted, with volcanic sand, iron oxide, and coal, lit up by cadmium red, and lacerated by Spagnulo’s vigorous gestures, all demonstrate how the artist’s formative action has now reached the ecstatic intensity of a Pan-like and shamanic liturgy” (Corà, 2014).
