Born in Venice in 1884, his biography remains rather obscure. In 1903 he married Bice Levi Minzi, a painter, and from 1905 he was followed by the Russian painter Schereschewskj already at Palazzo Pesaro. He studied in Paris with Anglada Spanish while attending Medardo Rosso and looking to Cézanne, Art Nouveau, Matisse, the Fauves and the Nabis.
