The Gallery

Since 1968, the year it was founded, Galleria dello Scudo has been concerned with Italian modern and contemporary art. Together with various public bodies it has organised important exhibitions of a strictly technical kind which, for their innovative approach, have been of great interest to both critics and the public.

The historical exhibitions

Among the historical shows, mention should be made of De Chirico, gli anni Venti, 1986-87, which was then transferred to Palazzo Reale, Milan; Boccioni 1912 Materia, 1991-92, shown again in 2004 at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, Soho-New York, with the title Boccioni, Materia: A Futurist Masterpiece and the Avant-garde in Milan and Paris; Fausto Melotti 'teatrini', 1996-97; Morandi ultimo. Nature morte 1950-1964, 1997-98, later seen again at the Peggy Guggenheim Collection, Venice; and De Chirico, gli anni Trenta, 1998-99. Exhibitions dealing with the post-war period included Afro, l’itinerario astratto, 1989; Pietro Consagra, necessità del colore, 2007-08, organised in collaboration with the Museo di Castelvecchio , Verona; Alberto Burri, opera al nero, 2012-13; Emilio Vedova, De America, 2013-14, and Antonio Sanfilippo, segno e immagine, 2015-16; Leoncillo, materia radicale, 2018-19, Piero Dorazio, la nuova pittura, 2022-23.The Gallery also offers works by Carla Accardi, Giacomo Balla, Giuseppe Capogrossi, Piero Dorazio, Lucio Fontana, Leoncillo, Piero Manzoni, Marino Marini, Gastone Novelli, Angelo Savelli, Salvatore Scarpitta, Toti Scialoja, Gino Severini, and Tancredi.

The artists

Furthermore, it promotes the work by the contemporary artists Gianni Dessì, Giovanni Frangi, Giuseppe Gallo, Marco Gastini, Eliseo Mattiacci, Nunzio, Luigi Ontani, and Giuseppe Spagnulo.

Collaborations

Among the many foreign museums with which it has collaborated with for important shows and studies are the Tate Gallery, London; the Phillips Collection, Washington; the Metropolitan Museum and the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York; and the Musée d’Orsay and the Musée d’Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris, Paris.
