12-16 June 2019
Once again this year the Galleria dello Scudo is present at Art Basel with a selection of works among the most representative of the expressive directions of Italian art of the last century of greatest interest today.
For the conceptual front, a masterpiece rare in size holds the stage: a three-foot-tall 1961 “sewn cloth” by Piero Manzoni, exhibited in retrospectives at the Musée d’Art Moderne de la Ville in Paris (1991) and the Serpentine Gallery in London (1998).
A striking 1953 Sacco e oro by Burri, formerly the property of Minsa Craig, the artist’s wife, joins a compendium of works by Afro, Carla Accardi, Antonio Sanfilippo and Giuseppe Santomaso, set against Emilio Vedova’s 1960/’62 Ciclo with its strong chromatic impact.
The display is enriched by a bronze Guerriero by Marino Marini dated 1956-57 from Pierre Matisse Gallery-New York, and by Leoncillo’s terracotta bas-relief Racconto di notte I dated 1961, chosen for the solo room dedicated to the sculptor at the XXXIV Venice Biennale in 1968.
Danseuse dans la lumière, a futurist painting by Severini executed between 1913 and 1914, and a Natura morta by Morandi from 1959, are among the “historical” presences chosen for the occasion.
