Galleria dello Scudo is present at Art Basel with a selection of works by Italian artists, in particular bronze sculptures by Marino Marini including the imposing Cavaliere (1951, height 119 cm), shown in his solo exhibition at Curt Valentin Gallery in New York in the fall of 1953. A rare Concetto spaziale by Lucio Fontana dated 1957 dialogues with an Achrome by Piero Manzoni, a 1958-1959 large-format gritted canvas, while a white Cretto by Alberto Burri executed in 1973 confronts some of his Cellotex from ten years later. Paintings by Afro, Carla Accardi and Antonio Sanfilippo create a short circuit with Incombente, 1984 by Emilio Vedova, which seems to take pictorial research to its extreme consequences.
The abstract line of Italian sculpture is well represented by Leoncillo’s stoneware work San Sebastiano nero conceived in 1962, extraordinary for its size (height 130 cm) and for the particular dark coloring that makes it unique in the artist’s production.
A Natura morta by Giorgio Morandi dated 1946, with objects imposing themselves in the foreground and with a rich exhibition history, is among the artist’s works offered for the occasion.
