The 1960s in Italy represented one of the periods of maximum expression of abstract tensions, partly related to Informel art and partly to the reiteration of a code through multiple compositional modes, which found one of the most representative exponents in Giuseppe Capogrossi.
The interaction with the United States world, stimulated by numerous exhibitions organized in collaboration with public institutions, led many overseas artists to establish close friendships and relationships with Italian painters and sculptors. Among them, Conrad Marca-Relli certainly deserves attention. He was already active within the New York School in the 1950s and was invited to hold a major retrospective at the Whitney Museum of American Art in 1967.
